Kenwood KDC-MP342U user review

This is my 2nd MP3 player by kenwood. My first one was a much older model and after what seems like easily 6 or 7 years of faithful service I decided to upgrade.

The usb port on the front is what makes it worth the upgrade. I can put thousands of songs onto a dirt cheap thumbdrive and not have to worry about MP3 cd’s all over my car.

The headunit also breathed new life into my 11 year old factory volvo speakers. I had no idea they could sound as good as they do. I’ve still got plans to put a recently acquired set of boston acoustic 6.5″ speakers in the front doors but I’m re-thinking my decision to also upgrade the rear door and rear deck speakers.

As far as the things about the unit that I don’t like, they’re very minor. For one, the 1~6 buttons control playback options and what not. The numbers of the buttons are very easy to read as they’re lit up but the functions is in a gray colored text that makes it hard to read. Before actually reading it in the manual, I didn’t know how to pause playback. The number 6 button does that but you wouldn’t know by looking at the unit because the little play/pause label is nearly impossible to read.

Also, when adjusting the bass, mids and treble, like my older unit, these only go to 8. Why 8??? Why not 10? Kenwood, this makes no sense. Stop it. Also, I’m a little disappointed to see the attenuation button absent from the unit. I used that pretty frequently on my older one but I guess they have to save something for the units that cost more than $110. :D

Anyways, minor complaints and that’s about it. The unit sounds great, and aside from initially figuring out what the small buttons do, I really like it. The music is easier to hear on the interstate as well. That was an unexpected surprise.

Boss BV7300 user review

This is my first experience with a Boss product, and I have to say that it will be the last. While it has plenty of bells and whistles, it’s not what it’s cracked up to be. For something that seems so nifty and extravagant, it’s programming screens and everything are very generic and lackluster, like programming a Tandy TRS80 from way back in the day…The biggest pro is that there are tons of ways to play media. USB, MP3 input jack, SD card slot, cd/dvd slot (which will play MP3’s, MP4’s, DVD’s, etc.), are all included and snazzy ideas. But the controls are clumsy and unpredictable. And as for the USB port, I was psyched. But unless you put a 256 MB drive in it, you’re in for quite a wait, while it apparently has to load and read every file before starting. I have a 4 GB jumpdrive in it, which takes about 5 minutes to load. But what absolutely takes the cake is it’s tendency to change sources randomly, seemingly on it’s own insane schedule. In a 45 – minute trip to work, I’ve actually had to change the source back to radio, or cd, or jumpdrive, or whatever more than 25 times. Then, it’ll work fine for an hour or two. It’s really aggravating…

After purchasing a car radio iRandom CS-101 and it did install on my car, I decided to publish a small guide for those like me who have difficulty in obtaining more information about this product, usually because the various shops that offer only give a brief description leaving out some features that can be rather useful for comparison between different radio without the player that the market offers.

This is a radio with AM and FM reception with RDS without CD player, MP3 format supported by the integrated card reader for SD or MMC card or by connecting via USB memory keys or other devices equipped with USB connection.

The radio also has a 3.5 mm jack as an input for external audio sources frontal type portable CD players or other.

The instruction manual is in Italian.

The car mount is simple enough for anyone with a bit of practice, some difficulties will be dismantled because once inserted in the machine frame assembly, the casing outside the car will cover one of two slots on which insert the supplied release keys that are used to remove the car radio.

The sound is of good quality, deep bass LOUD function Megabass kind or another, one of the things that usually do not find the features, is that the radio has 4 different selectable EQ: FLAT, CLASSICAL, ROCK, POP.

The power is good and even at high volume amplification provides an acceptable sound without excessive distortion.

The finishing and aesthetics are good, but the only available light is red and white buttons for the display, the circle segments in blue and white that you see on display in the photos accompanying the descriptions of the radio is not illuminated, the green bar is blue and white and moves to the rhythm of music, some buttons have more than one function depending on the mode selected audio (radio, usb, card, aux) at first seems a little difficult but then you get used to.

The radio also features a clock, mixtures if you can keep him active or not radio off, but also with key in it by disconnecting the key to everything is shut down, if you choose to focus rimanre the clock, the display will show ‘ hours with no backlight for which the setting sun will always be less visible.

Good tuning and RDS

Sore does not usually present in the features important to know but for those who wish to upload on your card or memory stick a lot of songs in MP3 format is that the radio has only one ways to search songs, shows 3 or better ways to search that are: track number search, search by song name and search directory, but in reality the only real numerical work.

An example: the songs on the radio has a SD or USB memory and lists them with a number starting with 1, 2 Gig SD card on my I uploaded about 300 songs divided into five directories, to listen to the song that I like to remind what number is and then search by entering the number corresponding to the desired track, or should I listen to them one by one the beginning of the songs prememdo the buttons “next” or “previous” buttons or “5″ or “6″ which have the same function, but advancing or retreating to 10 tracks at once to find the song you want.

By the way, to enter the 3 digit number for the numerical search, we must see the first digit desired using the volume + and volume – and then confirm by pressing “SEL” (not with the BND button as the instructions say)

I think it is absurd that has a card reader on which you can load hundreds of songs you can not see on display a list of directories and their contents so you can easily find the song you are interested, a function that so far I have always seen on radio that support MP3 files

It ’s true that generally the selling price is lower than the offer good sound quality but what do I need to have hundreds of songs available at all times and when you should make a list on a sheet of paper to find out the number of the song you want to hear? it is as if the contacts of your phone display only the phone numbers without the corresponding names.

Another important thing to know is that for any service or repair center authorized does not seem to exist in Italy: in this regard I also asked the seller but to date I have not confirmed the existence

Boss BV9990 user review

I purchased it last month, and had installed immediately. I have not upgraded my factory speakers, but the increase in sound quality was immediately noticible.

The touch screen has the appropriate sensativity in my opinion. The quality of the dvd picture is EXCELLENT. Looks no different than a smaller version of my 50 inch Samsung Plasma. Tom Tom plugs easily into the port and displays perfectly.

Has a hook up for a rear back up camera, that can be activated by a simple touch of the screen. Cd player works excellently. Plays multimedia, so hook up any device you can think of, and dj from the passenger seat. Those who are intending to purchase must realize the the screen flips upward. Be cautious of what it may block in the process.

If you have vents above your deck area, I would advise you to choose another radio. I bought it for a 2001 Dodge Conversion Van, and the only issue I have is the gearshift, which I must pull toward myself, to allow the screen to go up without being blocked. DVD player has a block that does not allow it to play while car is in gear, but I hear that there is a way around it (wink wink), but try not to allow it to distract the driver.

I also purchased a 20 inch Fold down Pyle TV, which is connected to my radio, so I can show the dvd’s there, and fold down the screen in the front so the driver is not disturbed. I hope this review is helpful to you all, and I wish you all a happy, fruitful, and blessed New Year. Godspeed.

Kenwood’s KDC-MP345U is a great replacement for that factory CD receiver, giving you both a USB port for simple connection of your iPod/iPhone or a thumb drive, an auxiliary input for other audio devices, playback of MP3/WMA files (via burnt CDs or from the USB port), and room to grow your system with dual preamp outputs.

Kenwood KDC-MP345U Removable Faceplate

The faceplate of this model can be removed and taken with you, to help deter theft. The control panel is equipped with an easy-to-read, one-line, 13-digit flourescent display for easy control and navigation.

Kenwood KDC-MP345U CD and WMA/MP3 Playback

Enjoy your favorite CDs and CD-Rs, or burn a disc of WMA or MP3 files and enjoy hours of music on a single disc, along with ID-3 tag display for artist and title info.

Kenwood KDC-MP345U Front-Panel USB Port

Plug in a thumb drive or other USB storage device for playback of your favorite MP3/WMA files, with easy folder navigation. The port will also charge portable devices, and offers control of some music phones via the receiver.

Kenwood KDC-MP345U Enjoy Your iPod

The USB port also provides simple connection of your iPod/iPhone allowing you to listen to your favorite music with your car stereo. Then you’ll get the added benefit of advanced search features designed to let you spend more time listening to your favorite songs instead of hunting for them: Alphabet Search, Reverse Browsing, and more.

Kenwood KDC-MP345U user review

I usually don’t do reviews, but I am so happy with this purchase I had to. I searched around for an entire month trying to find the right receiver. I think that for the money this product is hands down a total score! It has an aux and a usb. Now, when I purchased this I was thinking on using the ipod with the aux input originally. While the usb port can be used for direct Ipod connection and memory stick media (memory stick media?!) I figured I’d only use it to charge my ipod once the bat was running low. I have heard such bad things about ipod/usb functionality in radio receivers that I never thought I would actually use it. I love my ipod, and with the 32,000+ songs I have on there, being able to quickly scroll to what I want is essential, and its pretty hard to keep track of the new stuff I put on because I don’t have enough time in the day to listen to all the songs, so I do a lot of rating. trying to scroll through quickly using any receiver search button seemed like a joke and you can’t rate songs when you can’t use the ipods native click wheel. But i digress. The point is I looked in the manual and found “hands-on/hands/off”. With the ipod plugged into the usb port on the receiver I can hit 1 and 3 on the radio and switch between the modes. Now I can use the benefits of the usb port (charging, quality sound) AAAAND use my ipods native clickwheel functionality at the same time. I don’t even use the aux anymore! and whenever I decide I want to listen to the ipod on random i just push button 1 on the radio and my artist/album scroll across the screen and I am still happy. The only thing so far that is negative are:
1.the screen during the day is almost impossible to see with sunlight on it. it just looks pink.
2.when using the awesome usb mode i quickly mentioned up top…..for the first 30 seconds in either hands-on/hands-off mode you get a little song distortion because it is loading up i guess. Like i said i have over 30,000 songs and if i get 2 noise interruptions for a second a piece for the first 30 seconds of run-time and thats it, i’d say this is an outstanding product for all who love using there ipods in the car! buy it. u will be very happy. also, I have 4 polk audio db and they sound outstanding with all but a tiny fragment of songs in the hip-hop genre.

Sony MEX-BT3800U user review

You get a lot for your money with this unit. Between the front auxiliary in, USB, and Bluetooth you have plethora of connectivity options so you should be able to connect anything to this unit for a long time. That’s the unit’s biggest plus. In fact, it can be a little bit annoying to have to switch through so many inputs via the source to get to the one you want (you can turn off aux in the settings though). You can also add optional HD Radio through an expensive adapter. I don’t mind the lack of HD Radio since from what I’ve read, the execution isn’t great yet with radios switching back and forth between the HD and analog signal and the signals themselves not being in sync.

The display is easy to read at a glance, and RDS (displays what is currently playing on the tuner) makes finding new radio stations easy. The iPod controls on the unit are a bit too complicated to bother learning, especially since you can use the iPod’s own controls if you switch to “passenger mode”. The buttons on the bottom of the unit used to switch stations and perform other operations have kind of a sharp edge a the bottom, which can make them sometimes a little painful to press if you don’t aim high when you hit them. The USB will charge your iPod or other device fine.

The Bluetooth connectivity works really well, and sounds great. I use the Bluetooth stereo to stream music from my Motorola Droid with no problems. The Bluetooth hands free functionality is a bit basic since the unit won’t display who is calling you, just that you have a call. Not that big of a deal at this price point. My phone will automatically pair the hands free profile when I turn the stereo on, but seems kind of hit or miss with pairing the Bluetooth stereo profile automatically. From using my phone with another Bluetooth speaker, it seems like it’s more of an issue with the Droid.

One thing I find really strange with this unit is the remote functionality. If I use the head unit controls to turn on the unit / change source, the only control on the remote that will work is the off button. Vice versa, if you turn the unit on with the remote, all the remote functions work perfectly fine, but you can only use the volume controls on the head unit. Seek buttons, etc will not work. It took me a while to figure this out and at first I thought the remote control was defective. Again, this is not that big of deal to me since I would hardly use the remote, I just wish it was documented somewhere.

I tested the beat 275 for a month back at the start of the summer, now its time to share my findings. Upon receiving the stereo I was rather impressed, for the low price tag of £45 it was fully packaged and very good looking, Not like one the Chinese import units that tend to come in a plain white box with the units product code on. The box promised a lot and it certainly didn’t let me down.

The unit says it is capable of playing almost any media file, a bold statement but one that is very true. The unit can handle quite an impressive list of formats; CD, SD-Cards, MP3, Aux in and USB in. Some of these formats are not supported by units twice the price. I found the USB connection to be the most useful as it allowed me to connect my iPod to the unit. It does not have full control from the unit itself and you have to select songs from the iPod however considering the price of the unit this is something that can easily be overlooked.

The appearance of the stereo is quite impressive, it has the look of a far more expensive unit. The controls are very easy to use with the menus being intuitive. My grandad who is in his late 60’s is technically classed as a technophobe however he managed to pick up the basic control and function within a couple of minutes. All this is helped by the clear colour dot matrix screen.

Where most cheap stereo’s fall down is the quality of the sound they produce. This is one of the Beat 275’s strongest areas. For the £45 price tag you are getting a very strong unit, I ran it alongside a Cerwin Vega 15” sub and the clarity of the audio was highly impressive. It was easily on par with units in the £120-150 price range. The unit also features the now standard equalizer allowing you to fine tweak the sound to the type of music you like listening to.

It is very hard to find a fault with a unit costing less than £50 especially when it is crammed full of features like the Beat 275. I suppose the only downfall of the unit is the fact that Beat is still a new brand. Given the choice between this and a Sony most people will go with the best known brand, perhaps this is where the product will struggle.
In Summary, if you want a good solid bargain stereo then the Beat 275 is perfect for you. If you want a stereo that is crammed with features and plays a multitude of formats, the Beat 275 is for you. Put simply the Beat 275 is the stereo for everyone. If I had to pick one of the stereos I have tested in the past 6months to keep, this would be the one.

When was the last time you walked into a store and purchased a CD? If it takes you a few moments to come up with an answer, you’ve probably made the jump to digitally distributed and stored audio. If so, Alpine may have the car stereo for you, the Alpine iDA-X100 digital media receiver.

The iDA-X100 eschews physical media in favor of a purely digital approach. Music is played back over a USB pigtail that features full-speed iPod connectivity. An intuitive interface makes it easy to find the song you want, and advanced audio controls ensure that your digital music sounds as good as the day you ripped it.

Alpine iDA-X100 Design

The first thing you’ll notice about the Alpine iDA-X100 is the huge knob in the center of the faceplate. The Double Action Encoder, as the instruction manual calls it, is twisted to adjust volume, navigate menus, and choose songs. Pushing the large select button in the knob’s center makes selections in menus and enters the search mode when a digital-audio source is selected. The outer ring of the knob can be pressed and rotated for the Percent Search mode, which is used to quickly jump through long lists. If, for example, you want to quickly get to an artist beginning with the letter Q, you can press, twist, and hold the outer ring to quickly jump from A to B and so on, instead of endlessly rotating the dial and scrolling through all of the artists on the device. The Percent Search is also used to jump between radio presets and MP3 folders and playlists when not in search mode.

A full color LCD display fills the right third of the receiver’s face. Here you’ll find song and menu information and, if connected to an iPod, album artwork. Buttons flank the center knob and fill the left third of the front panel. The Alpine iDA-X100 cannot display video content from a connected device, but at 2.2 inches diagonal, it’s probably too small for comfortable viewing anyway.

The iDA-X100 lacks an optical media player, so if you’re the type of user who listens to many CDs or burns MP3s to disc, then this is not the player for you. In place of the disc slot, the iDA-X100 gains a full speed USB connection for lightning quick access to music stored on MP3 players, iPods, and other USB mass storage devices. The iDA-X100 plays back MP3, WMA, and AAC files and can even handle DRM protected digital audio.

Alpine has curiously decided to make the faceplate only partially detachable. The user is able to remove the left two-thirds of the faceplate, which includes the buttons and the center knob, but the LCD screen stays in place. The faceplate’s buttons and the LCD screen feature blue edge illumination and backlighting, which can be changed to red illumination through the menu.

Alpine iDA-X100 Features

Outputting an average of 18 watts into four discrete channels (50 watts per channel max) the Alpine iDA-X100 represents a notable upgrade in volume and sound quality over most stock car stereos. For those wishing to further tweak the sound, the receiver features three 2-volt full-range preamp outputs with a third dedicated subwoofer preamp output with level controls for adding additional amplifiers and speakers.

An advanced equalizer and the Imprint audio processor allow users to fine tune the dynamic range, staging, and individual speaker delay to meet the needs of their unique vehicles and optimize the sound for the full vehicle or specifically for the driver’s seat. So that you don’t waste all of that processing power playing back compressed digital audio, the receiver also features a Media Xpander (MX) setting that helps correct information lost at time of compression. The MX can also be applied to analog sources, such as FM radio, to boost sound quality, but it sounds best with digital sources.

The iDA-X100 is also upgradable via external modules for additional functionality. Satellite radio, HD Radio, Bluetooth hands-free, and an external CD changer are among the modules that can be connected to and controlled by the iDA-X100 through its proprietary Ai-Net connection. When connected to the Bluetooth module, the iDA-X100 also gains the ability to stream music from A2DP Bluetooth-enabled devices.

When connected to Alpine’s HD Radio receiver–the TUA-T550HD–and an Apple iPod, the iDA-X100 gains the ability to iTunes-tag songs. If the HD Radio broadcast contains artist/song information, holding the center select button stores the song’s metadata onto the connected iPod. Later, when the iPod is reconnected to iTunes for syncing, a playlist is created under the Store heading called “Tagged.” Users can then listen to a 30-second preview of the song or purchase the song for downloading.

Alpine iDA-X100 Performance

We tested the iDA-X100 with a 16GB iPod Touch. Upon connecting the iPod, the iDA-X100 began scanning the device. After about a 10- to 15-second search, the receiver started playback. The receiver picks up playback wherever the iPod left off, so if you were listening to a song or podcast as you entered your car, the iDA-X100 would resume at the exact spot you paused.

The full-speed iPod connection allows for extremely quick navigation of artists, albums, genres, and podcasts–nearly as quick as the iPod itself. The direct connection to the iPod means that the iDA-X100 can play back any format that an iPod can, including MP3, AAC, and Apple Lossless. We’re very happy about that last one, as most iPod-compatible receivers don’t play the lossless format.

When connected to a USB key, we were able to browse folders full of MP3s just as quickly as with the iPod. The center knob and its Percent Search feature make it very easy to jump from folder to folder without drudging through menus.

We only ran into one consistent glitch during our test of the iDA-X100. While listening to audio stored on an iPod, if we powered the unit off while leaving the iPod connected–for example, to step away from the vehicle–upon restarting the car and the receiver, the iDA-X100 would forget that a device was attached and require that we disconnect and reconnect the cable to rerecognize. The glitch didn’t occur with music stored on a USB key, so it may be more of an issue with the iPod’s firmware than the iDA-X100, but it was annoying nonetheless.

Alpine iDA-X100 final verdict

The good: The Alpine iDA-X100 features a full-speed USB/iPod connection for speedy browsing of songs with the large search knob. Percent Search mode allows for quick scrubbing through long lists. Alpine Imprint audio processing allows drivers a great deal of freedom to adjust audio for best possible sound.

The bad: The iDA-X100 occasionally forgets that an iPod device is attached if the vehicle is started or stopped while a podcast is playing. The lack of an optical disc player can be a bit of an inconvenience for some users.

The bottom line: The Alpine iDA-X100 is a great receiver for people who transport all of their music on an iPod or MP3 player. The unit offers fantastic digital-audio integration without the need for a separate adapter, but should you ever want to just play a CD, you’ll be out of luck.

A month or so ago I purchased a new car, MK4 VW Golf 1.9 TDI. Not being brand new, I wanted to make some changes to make it feel more like mine. First thing I noticed was the out-dated sound system in the car. Despite being a 51 reg, it came with a tape deck of all things and a 6-disc CD changer. Ugly, boring and outdated. I wanted something a bit snazzier. I had seen other Golfs with single DIN units, meaning there was a horrible gap in the dash board. Opting for double-din was the only logical choice. Most double din units are expensive and incorporate a DVD player or sat nav of some sort.

I wasn’t after that, just something to play MP3 CD’s and the radio. When i saw this one though, i fell in love. The sexy fascia, blue lights and jam packed features made it a must buy.

The pioneer FH-P80BT comes with a number of cool features. First off, filling my needs, its MP3 compatible, but better than that, it has an input (at the rear (which i ran into the glove box)) for a USB. So you can plug pretty much anything into it, in theory, ipods, phones, MP3 players. I opted for a 2gb USB flash drive, now I have loads of music at my finger tips with ease. You could in theory, (as ive seen elsewhere on the internet) attach a USB external hard drive to it and thus have many gig’s of music at your disposal. If you so chose. which is nice.

Next function worth mentioning is the blue tooth hands free. The unit comes with a mic and sufficient wire to install it somewhere suitable in your car, as long as you’ve got nimble fingers. Once programmed, it works a treat. You can actually set it up to regonise and search for your phone automatically. I have mine setup that way, told the phone to treat the unit as a trusted source, now whenever i get in the car and turn the ignition on, the unit searches for and registers my phone automatically. You can also download your phone book to the CD player and use it to dial numbers that way, using the fascia buttons and the large convenient dial.
Clearly the sound is a big point on any upgrade like this. Let’s be honest, you are forking out good money, you want good qaulity. Pioneer does not disappoint. This unit has amazing sound quality, even with my standard VW speakers and no extra amp or subwoofers (yet). Its lovely and I can’t fault it. A vast improvement over the standard VW unit in every department, looks, sound, features.

The manual and user guides included make it an easy install. I was a bit worried about it, having never done it before, but its an adventure doing something like this yourself, so i bought the necessary keys, removed the old decks, unplugged the power from the battery (its recommended you disconnect the negative power lead on the battery BEFORE you start the installation), then it was just a case of working out what wires go where, its not as scary as you might think.
One thing to mention here. The standard arieal cable on the car, would NOT connect to this unit, you need to buy a seperate adapter, but it was only £5, so i was happy to do so, to keep the wife happy with her radio listening. Installs easily. Screws into place and a fascia covers it over nicely. It wouldnt be easy to steal, by any means.

comes with a remote control, but its a big one and im not sure what to do with it really so its sitting in the glove box. you can however buy a little steering wheel attachable remote from Pioneer which works with every pioneer unit. Its handy, but on reflection not completely necessary. The big silver dial on the front acts as both a skip, select and volume changing device, all in one. Its so easy to use, my wife has no trouble.
Id recommend it to perfect strangers, nevermind my friends.
